Diwali Alone in a New City? 9 Things That Help

Spending Diwali away from family in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru or Pune? Nine practical ideas for the festival week, including finding company safely.

The week before Diwali is the loneliest week of the year for anyone who moved cities for work. Your feed fills with family photos, your office empties out, and the flat is very quiet. Here are nine things that genuinely help.

1. Decide early what you are doing

Drifting into Diwali with no plan is what makes it hard. Pick the two days that matter and put something in the calendar, even if it is small.

2. Say yes to the society Diwali

High-rise societies in Noida, Gurugram, Thane and Whitefield all do a card night or a rangoli morning. Walking in alone is awkward for ten minutes and fine after that.

3. Do the shopping trip anyway

Sarojini, Lajpat Nagar, Crawford Market, Commercial Street, Law Garden: festival markets are the best free entertainment in any Indian city, and far more fun with company.

4. Host something small

Three people and a packet of diyas is a party. Colleagues who also stayed back will usually say yes.

5. Volunteer on the day

Animal shelters and old-age homes need hands during festival week. It fills the hardest hours with something that matters.

6. Book a companion for the evening you dread

If it is the family lunch or the office party you are avoiding, a verified, platonic companion solves exactly that problem. Free to join during launch: Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru. See festival companions.

7. Call home at a fixed time

A scheduled video call beats an open-ended "I'll call later" that never happens.

8. Get out of the flat on the quiet days

The days after Diwali are the emptiest. A long walk, a cinema ticket, a café with a book: anything that is not the same four walls.

9. Take the loneliness seriously

Feeling low during festivals is normal and it passes. If it does not, talk to someone. Tele-MANAS is free and open around the clock on 14416.

If you want company for one evening this Diwali, joining takes two minutes and costs nothing while we launch. Read the safety checklist first.
